Dr Jussi Holopainen

GEElab Europe Co-Director, Dr Jussi Holopainen

Jussi worked at Nokia Research Center for 16 years, most of his adult life, as a game and interaction researcher before realizing that he could do something else in his life as well. He quit his job and spent a year as a freelance performance arts researcher in Berlin. He also wrote some really bad theatre plays, which hopefully will never again see the light of day. Not being able to resist the siren song of regular employment (and regular paychecks), he joined GEELab Europe June 2013 as a postdoc games researcher. Jussi is interested in play, technology, public and semi-public places, performance arts, and claustrophobia. Currently he supports the PhD research team by leading the publishing and conference discussion in the fortnightly GEEloquium - a regular meetup between PhD researchers to discuss research strategies, methodologies and techniques.

Previous Projects:
Jussi has worked on or supervised many game related research projects during his years at Nokia Research Center. He still claims that the Gameplay Design Patterns project and Integrated Project on Pervasive Gaming (IPerG) have caused him more headaches than any other past, present, or future project.

Publications:
In addition to hordes of conference and journal articles, book chapters, and patents Jussi is an author of
Björk, S., & Holopainen, J. (2005). Patterns in Game Design. Charles River Media.
and one of the editors of
Fernaeus, Y., Holopainen, J., Höök, K., Ivarsson, K., Karlsson, A., Lindley, S., & Norlin, C. (Eds.). (2012). Plei Plei. PPP Company Ltd.
He readily admits to having been working on both books.
His pretentiously titled dissertation Foundations of Gameplay gives a good overview of his previous research and publications.
